Christian values in action (examples to draw on from School life) 

 

3 Core Values 

 

Faith  

Matthew Chapter 17:20 

If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘move from here to there and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.’ 

 

  • Faith is one of our core values as reflected in our Mission statement 

  • Children taught over time to understand the importance of the Eucharist 

  • Year 5 attend Holy Communion St. Matthew’s Church and worship with the congregation 

  • School visit Church at least four times each year; one of these visits includes Holy Communion/blessing for children – yes leave in as Y5 back on it! 

  • Prayer is a central part of School life; morning worship, grace before lunch, home-time prayers, prayer corners and spontaneous prayer 

  • Prayer club 

  • Children have opportunities to meet people of faith; Father Alex, Bishop Philip, Lisa Fenton and other world faith visitors - ?? Can't think of any?! 

  • Confirmation programme run at St Matthews Church by Father Alex- this seems to be run in church now 

  • Year 4 visit Blackburn Cathedral and a Mosque as part of their RE unit ‘The Church’, children get to experience different places of worship 

  • Year 2 visit to Manchester Jewish Museum and Synagogue.  

  • Relationship between Church and School; Father Alex/ Rev Kat regularly supports RE work within school 

  • Children encouraged to believe and have faith in their own abilities 

  • Worship team  

  • Spirituality day at Whalley Abbey 

  • WOW Worship days- Easter, Christmas 

  • Christian symbols and displays around school 

 

Family 

Proverbs Chapter 22:6 

Train a child up in the way they should go; even when they are old, they will not depart from it. 

 

  • Family is one of core values from the Mission statement and can represent – our families at home, our School family, our Church family and a wider outreaching global family 

  • Church services 

  • We pray for all aspects of our family 

  • Classes leading Worship – parents and friends invited 

  • EYFS stay and play sessions 

  • Family atmosphere in School (many parts, one body) which also includes rules, boundaries and expectations 

  • Family events – Easter egg bingo, Summer fayre, children’s disco’s, St. Matthew’s Church fayre 

  • Parental workshops offered throughout the year to encourage parents to support their children’s learning/upskill themselves 

  • Charity work and fund-raising for the local community and wider global projects e.g. Pendleside Hospice, East Lancs Hospital, Manchester Children’s Hospital, St Matthew’s Food Bank, St Matthew’s Church fund, NSPCC, Comic Relief, Children in Need, Save the children, The Children's Society, Watoto 

  • Staff organise social events for each other e.g. significant birthdays 

  • Parents helpers/Governors on educational visits 

  • Parent helpers coming into school ton help run sustainability projects  - Yep!! 

  • House teams/Sports days – children split into family groups; older children look after younger pupils 

  • WOW Worship days siblings placed into the same groups to experience school together. 

  • Pastoral support from learner mentor/Caritas social worker for children and families 

  • Large Child Protection/CAF caseload; we care for our children and want the best for them 

  • Learning mentor’s ‘Lunch Bunch’ group supports children with basic family skills e.g. using cutlery, sitting as a group and eating together, co-operative games etc 

  • Key Stage 2 children are playground helpers for Key stage 1, lunch time helpers and buddies 

  • KS2 Residential visits 

 

Friendship 

John Chapter 15:13 

Greater love has no-one than this; than he who lays his life down for his friends. 

 

  • Friendship is one of our core values as reflected in our Mission Statement 

  • Children help support new pupils to School 

  • EAL pupils and parents can work together and translate for one another 

  • Friendship award for each class at annual ‘awards afternoon’ 

  • Older children have opportunities to support younger children e.g. playtime helpers, Infant helpers, Seeds and Gardeners etc 

  • Children are encouraged to care and support one another 

  • ‘Caritas’ social worker/Learning Mentor run friendship groups for children who may have difficulties in their relationships 

  • Children see staff acting as role models and being supportive to each other 

  • Staff have social events  

  • Links with charities and our friends at Watoto – definitely! 

  • RE/PSHE curriculum 

  • Behaviour policy supports children with managing their relationships 

 

 

6 Focus Values 

 

Courage 

1 Corinthians Chapter 16:13   

Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. 

 

  • Facing challenges and overcoming them in learning/lessons 

  • Standing up for self or others 

  • Challenging yourself to be the best you can be 

  • Year 6 children putting themselves forward for confirmation and making a commitment in front of the rest of the School – Should we take out as hasn’t happened for a few years and can’t see it happeneing again! 

  • Standing up and speaking in worship for the first time; particularly for children with speech and language problems/children who lack confidence 

  • KS2 challenging themselves with outdoor adventure activities on residential visits e.g. high ropes etc 

  • Children challenging themselves during OPAL play sessions 

  • Asking for help with learning in class if needed 

  • New children staring school particularly for those with English as an additional language 

  • To admit you have done something wrong  

  • Courage in test situations which can be overwhelming 

  • Children in School with short or long-term medical conditions 

  • Representing the School in sport against teams that you know are much better 

  • Approaching other children to join in their games 

  • Performing on stage at the Let’s Go Sing Concert  

  • Participating in School swimming gala/gymnastics competition when all eyes are on you 

  • Putting ideas and opinions forwards in Worship team/School council meetings  

 

Perserverance 

Philippians Chapter 4:13 

I can do all things through Him who strengthens me. 

  • Pushing through challenges, refusing to give up on things that they find difficult e.g. tying shoe laces, zipping up coats, dressing themselves, learning a new instrument, mastering a sport or technique ion PE. 

  • Setting personal goals e.g. trying to improve handwriting or learning a particular timetable. 

  • Positive self-talk encouraged 

  • Embracing mistakes and learning from them. 

  • Problem solving activities e.g. KS2 residential visits, OPAL play 

  • Any others? OAA Outdoor elements? 

  • Vulnerable children being resilient learners? 

 

Respect 

Matthew Chapter 7:12 

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. 

  • We encourage children to be stewards of God’s world and treat it with care and respect 

  • Children encourage to recycle to create a more sustainable environment and help to look after God’s world. - yep! 

  • Children have regular planned opportunities to visit Church and Year 4 children visit a Mosque in Blackburn. Staff act as role models to children who may have no/limited experiences of attending Church 

  • Educational visits help children to appreciate and respect different environments 

  • Good manners encouraged 

  • There are positive relationships on all levels in School; children and children, staff and children, staff with other staff 

  • Staff are respectful to parents and the community we serve 

  • Children encouraged to listen and take turns 

  • Respect shown to visitors to School 

  • Teamwork encouraged 

  • Children have opportunities to take part in many sporting events and show respect within competitive situations

Joy 

Nehemiah Chapter 8:10 

The joy of the Lord is your strength 

  • Daily acts of kindness e.g. opening a door, greeting or complimenting someone. 

  • Supporting other by celebrating their successes- celebration assembly 

  • Small gestures e.g. birthday cards, singing happy birthday to children  

  • Physical and creative expression e.g. dance, OPAL play, art, music, WATOTO concert 

  • Mindfulness sessions 

  • Being present- Pausing and appreciating moments  

  • Any other?- interactions with each other daily? 

  • Vulnerable children experiencing joy at school through their safe space? 

 

Forgiveness 

Ephesians Chapter 4:32 

Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you 

  • Children and staff forgive pupils who may have challenging behaviour and can disrupt learning – its in behaviour policy! 

  • Children repeatedly forgiving a disruptive pupil and then encouraging him to join in their games       Do we want this in?- I think so. They show empathy to others who are struggling (CW & Y6?) 

  • Children and staff admitting, they are wrong and have made mistakes 

  • Children regularly say sorry to one another if they have fallen out 

  • Curriculum debates e.g. should the 3 bears forgive Goldilocks. Why would the Father forgive his prodigal son? 

  • Children making friends again after arguments 

  • Behaviour policy 

  • Donations to School from Birnely Community Grocery for our School breakfast club 

  • School accesses Christmas gifts from Caritas for some of our more disadvantaged children 

 

Compassion 

Colossians 3 Chapter 12 

Clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 

  • Mug of love passed round staff – has this died of death? 

  • Deck the Hall- staff are provided with a turkey sandwich to show appreciation for them staying behind to prepare school for Advent. 

  • Staff buy flowers for each other at difficult times and times of celebration and buy gifts for significant birthdays 

  • Children get a small gift every year from Father Christmas 

  • Ensuring children don’t miss out on bouncy castle, cake sales during fund raising events if they have not brought their own money 

  • Large child protection/CAF workload; we love our children and want the best for them 

  • Donations by staff as well as children to school events/charities 

  • Local businesses donate items to School for our breakfast club 

  • Older children helping other to create a family atmosphere e.g. sports day, playground leaders 

  • Any leftover produce from breakfast club are donated to families 

  • Children are very welcoming to new children who transfer from other Schools 

  • We encourage an ethos whereby we love God and one another 

 

 

Other Values 

 

Service 

  • Children taking on responsibilities and jobs throughout School e.g. Worship ambassadors, Leadership ambassadors, playground helpers, Seeds and Gardeners, Y5 sustainability team and more?- yep? 

  • Raising money for charities  

  • School community collecting for good causes e.g. St Matthew’s Food Bank 

  • Acts of kindness e.g. children keeping classroom tidy helps site supervisor. 

  • One of our teachers led a Mission to Moldova to support some of the most disadvantaged communities in Europe 

  • Global focus prayer tree concentrating on different global issues e.g. Ukraine, Iran 

  • Governors/parent helpers supporting on educational visits 

  • Representing the School at events 

  • Extra-curricular activities – planting, litter picking, tidying School grounds 

  • Links with Abbeyfield Care home e.g. children spend time with the older generations playing games and performing songs etc. - def! 

 

 

Thankfulness 

  • Harvest Festival service at St Matthews Church– all School community thanking God for all his gifts 

  • Prayers throughout the day – Graces at lunchtime which encourage children to appreciate what they have 

  • Art and craft activities; appreciating our efforts and talents 

  • Children thank staff after educational visits and really appear to appreciate the opportunities 

  • Staff show appreciation for one another buy bringing cakes/treats for each other 

  • Thank you, prayers, 

  • Being polite and using manners 

  • Children appreciating receiving thank you letters after charity work 

  • Children writing thank you letters e.g. after Mosque/Cathedral visits or to thank visitor that have come into school e.g. Alan and Pauline 

  • Families given surplus products from breakfast club and really appreciate these small donations 

 

Creativity 

  • Extra-curricular activities for children e.g. Science club, DT club, Friendship club 

  • Considering use of School finances carefully e.g. saving money through networking photocopiers 

  • Considering different way to recycle within school to help create a more sustainable environment- I think this would be good to keep in. 

  • Curriculum activities – art, music, dance 

  • EYFS and Y1 children encouraged to express themselves and be creative in the ‘creation area’ of the classroom 

  • Children contribute to raising money at the Summer fayre by designing and making things to sell e.g candle holders, growing plants, baking etc 

  • Homework activities not just reading and writing – speaking and listening, making things, researching etc 

  • Creative prayer stations in School 

  • Creative prayer group (break times with Mrs. Allum) 

  • Pupil premium money spent wisely to support the most disadvantaged children 

  • Creative acts of worship/Worship team 

  • Collaborative activities 

  • Nativity/Summer concert and productions 

 

 

Hope 

  • School fund-raising work 

  • Children/School take part in national events e.g. Children in Need, Christmas Jumper day etc 

  • Children encouraged to be aspirational

  • Focus on acquiring basic skills in preparation for secondary school and the world of work 

  • Encouraging a positive mind set 

 

Trust 

  • Children can confide in staff if they need help/support 

  • Children trust teachers/staff to help them with their learning and be the best they can be 

  • Children share ideas/make suggestions within the learning environment without fear of embarrassment 

  • Children have responsibilities around School – Lunchtime helpers, Librarians, Reading Ambassadors etc 

  • Child protection/safeguarding and behaviour – children and staff trust that decisions will be made that are in the child’s best interests 

  • Staff trust one another professionally e.g. subject leaders – that they are knowledgeable and will do their best for their subject and School 

  • We trust the children to represent the School well in out of School situations e.g. educational visits, sports events, Church visits, residential visits and they do not let us down. Their good behaviour is often commented on by other staff, completion leaders etc
