Compassionate Schools Award LEHSS
Supporting Every Child to Flourish
At Holy Trinity CE Primary School, we are committed to ensuring that every child feels safe, valued, respected and supported. As part of our vision of 'Life in all its fullness' (John 10:10), we recognise that emotional health and wellbeing are fundamental to children’s learning, development and success.
We are proud to have achieved the LEHSS Compassionate Schools Award, a Lancashire-wide accreditation that recognises schools that demonstrate a strong commitment to promoting emotional health, wellbeing and positive mental health throughout the whole school community. The award is built around the Department for Education's principles for a whole-school approach to mental health and wellbeing.
What is a Compassionate School?
A compassionate school is one where children, families and staff feel a strong sense of belonging and where relationships are at the heart of everything we do. It is a school that actively promotes kindness, empathy, understanding and inclusion, ensuring that everyone is supported to thrive.
At Holy Trinity, this means:
- Creating a safe, nurturing and inclusive environment for all pupils.
- Supporting children's emotional health and wellbeing.
- Promoting positive relationships between pupils, staff and families.
- Helping children develop resilience, confidence and self-esteem.
- Ensuring staff wellbeing is valued and supported.
- Working closely with families and external agencies to provide the right support at the right time.
Our Wellbeing Journey
Our work towards the Compassionate Schools Award reflects many aspects of school life that are already embedded within our Christian ethos and values of Faith, Family and Friendship.
We continually strive to:
- Promote positive mental health and wellbeing across the school.
- Listen to and act upon pupil voice.
- Provide opportunities for children to develop leadership and responsibility.
- Support vulnerable pupils and families through targeted pastoral support.
- Ensure all staff receive high-quality professional development in emotional health and wellbeing.
- Celebrate diversity and encourage children to show compassion and respect towards others.
Mental Health Ambassadors play an increasing role within school, helping to promote positive wellbeing and mindfulness activities amongst their peers.
Working with Families
We believe that strong partnerships between home and school are essential.
Our staff work closely with parents, carers and external agencies to ensure that children receive the support they need. Through our pastoral provision, family support services and wellbeing initiatives, we aim to remove barriers to learning and help children achieve their full potential. Please also see our 'Help & Support' page which contains further information and links to helpful organisations.
Compassionate Leadership
As part of our development work, we are embedding compassionate leadership throughout the school. This means encouraging staff to lead with empathy, understanding and care while maintaining high expectations for every member of our school community.
Compassionate leadership helps create a positive culture where children and adults feel valued, supported and empowered to succeed. This work forms an important part of our school improvement priorities and commitment to continuous development.
Our Commitment
By gaining the Compassionate Schools Award, we are demonstrating our ongoing commitment to:
- Emotional health and wellbeing.
- Inclusion and belonging.
- Positive relationships.
- Staff wellbeing and development.
- Pupil voice and leadership.
- Supporting children to flourish academically, socially, emotionally and spiritually.
At Holy Trinity, we believe that when children feel cared for, understood and connected, they are able to learn more effectively, develop positive relationships and become compassionate citizens who make a difference in the world around them.
"Life in all its fullness" is at the heart of everything we do, and our Compassionate Schools journey helps us ensure that every child has the opportunity to flourish.
